Timeline

The Factory of the Future project was carried out in three phases:

  1. Preparation
  2. Implementation
  3. Project impact monitoring

During the first phase, Kronospan Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology studied current production in order to determine the precise status of the production lines in relation to the objectives. The analysis focused on thermal energy consumption and tap water consumption. The objective is to assess to what extent energy efficiency can be improved and how resources can be produced and recovered directly on site. This phase was completed in June 2013.

The implementation actions have consisted in applying the necessary measures to reduce the environmental footprint of water and carbon for the installation. These included:

  • Improving the efficiency of the water distribution system;
  • Recovering water and reusing it in the production process;
  • Collecting and storing rainwater for re-use in the production phases where lower quality water is required;
  • Increasing the quantity of biomass for combustion;
  • Increasing total energy efficiency.

The project has been extended by one year until 31/10/2016. Project impact monitoring was implemented since July 2013 until October 2016.
